Mariners to retire Edgar Martinez’s No. 11 this season

By the way, Cobb was enshrined in the very first BBWAA election, in 1936. Yeah.

You can read my longer explanation here, but essentially, I’ve taken this view: The Hall of Fame should reflect the game as it is, warts and all.

Anyway, that’s not my point today. As I said earlier, I want to talk about Manny Ramirez.

I put an X next to the box by Manny’s name, as I did for the boxes next to Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens. I’ve read columns from a lot of my voting colleagues who have drawn a line of distinction between Manny and Bonds/Clemens, and they’ve cast their ballot for the latter two but not Manny. The difference is obvious, of course. Bonds and Clemens, even though everybody knows they did at least some of the things they’ve been accused of, were never actually caught and punished by baseball.

Mark your calendars, Mariners fans. A big name will be honored this season.

The team announced Tuesday it will retire Edgar Martinez’s No. 11 this summer, which he wore in each in each of his 18 seasons in Seattle.

The Mariners will host a weekend in honor of Martinez from Aug. 11-13 with the Angels in town. The number retirement ceremony is set for Aug. 12.

Martinez’s will become the second player to have his Cheap Elite Jerseys number retired by Seattle. It will hang next to Ken Griffey Jr.’s No. 24.

Martinez played his entire career with the Mariners from 1986-2004 and retired with a career .312/.418/.515 slash line, 309 home runs and 1,261 RBIs.

He now serves as Seattle’s hitting coach, a position he’s held since the 2015 season.

Mets place Yoenis Cespedes on 10-day DL

Wide receiver. This group is a far cry from the one new head coach Sean McVay got to work with in Washington. Tavon Austin isn’t a true No. 1 wideout (even though he’s being paid like one). Neither is free-agent pickup Robert Woods from Buffalo. The Rams also don’t have a first-round pick to spend on the position after trading it to Tennessee last year for the chance to select quarterback Jared Goff.

Quarterback. The 49ers face a franchise-altering decision come draft night — select a QB with the No. 2 overall pick or continue to wait in hopes of acquiring Washington’s Kirk Cousins whether via trade or free agency by the 2018 offseason. In the meantime, journeyman Brian Hoyer is set to handle the starting reigns for his seventh different NFL team.

There was a feeling Thursday night that Yoenis Cespedes may miss some time with an injury, but no one was truly positive.

Well, everyone is positive now.

This comes after the Mets lost their sixth consecutive games and 10 of their last 11. Cespedes is hitting .270 on the season but leading the team in home runs (6), walks (11) and doubles (4). He was second on the team in RBI (10) and base hits (17).

Since coming over to the Mets in a trade from the Tigers, the Cuban Cheap Barcelona Jerseys native 89 home runs and drove in 243 runs in 356 games.

Juan Lagares replaced Cespedes Thursday night, but it’s uncertain if he’ll be the first option in Cespedes’ absence.

The teams will tell you they conducted extensive probes into the various cases

Because, clearly, when a player is talented enough to be useful, such histories of violence against women are shrugged off, excused, explained away.

The teams will tell you they conducted extensive probes into the various cases, issued lie detector tests, scrutinized police reports, interviewed coaches and teammates and classmates and friends … and, of course, the players themselves.

Then they say, essentially, we trust him, we believe him, we can’t deny him a second chance, we can work with him, we can put him in a supportive environment … and, wow, he can really play.

Just as they always have with “character” concerns and “red flags” before 2014, and as they have since then.

As for Bowman, Lynch knows there’s “some question whether he’s a system fit” from outsiders. A 4-3 defense is being installed by new coordinator Robert Saleh, but Bowman has played inside linebacker in a 3-4 his entire standout seven-year NFL career in San Francisco.

Bowman also is coming off a torn Achilles tendon — his second major leg injury in a four-season span -— and turns 29 later this month. Plus, the 49ers set the stage to potentially phase-out Bowman by drafting Foster and signing ex-Oakland and Seattle starter Malcolm Smith to a five-year, $26.5 million contract Cheap Gaelic Jerseys in free agency.

According to spotrac.com, San Francisco can clear as much as $3.8 million in 2018 cap space while carrying $8.2 million in dead money by releasing or trading Bowman in the 2018 offseason.

It feels like more than a mere coincidence that both Rice and Hardy have been back in the news lately.

A player involved in an active rape investigation: first-round pick. One caught on video punching a woman and breaking bones in her face: second-round pick. One previously charged twice in incidents with his children’s mother, once for throwing her to the ground and once for biting her: fourth-round pick.

One arrested and accused of dragging his girlfriend across the floor a month before the draft: third-round pick. One charged a week before the draft with hitting a woman outside a bar, knocking her tooth out and knocking her unconscious: sixth-round pick.

Those picks, respectively, are Gareon Conley, Joe Mixon, Dede Westbrook, Jourdan Lewis and Caleb Brantley.

It feels like more than a mere coincidence that both Rice and Hardy have been back in the news lately. Rice will be part of a presentation to players and staff this season about social responsibility, according to ESPN, speaking of the repercussions on his life from hitting his then-fiancee in 2014.

Lynch, though, didn’t sound like he was in a hurry to part ways with Bowman. In fact, Lynch offered high praise for how Bowman has handled the rehabilitation process that Cheap Authentic Jerseys From China should also have him medically cleared by training camp.

“He didn’t blink when we drafted Reuben and signed Malcolm,” Lynch said. “Like every other position, we’re going to let competition bring out the best in all of them. I think that will happen with NaVorro. We all know what he’s done in this league.

Just the fact Foster and Bowman should be ready to play — period — is good news amid the gloom-and-doom scenarios as Lynch and Shanahan begin their efforts to rebuild the 49ers.

NFL division rankings: Win totals determine best, worst among AFC, NFC

Just a few years ago, the 49ers, Seahawks and Cardinals (sorry, Rams) battled at the top of the NFL’s best division. The NFC West peaked in 2013, when all three contenders reached at least 10 wins.

Now, based on Bovada.lv’s win totals for the 2017 season, the NFC West is the worst division in pro football.

SN added Bovada’s win totals (as of May 9) of all four teams in each division. The results are group totals to help us rank the league’s divisions and settle the argument before it starts: Which division is the NFL’s toughest?

The league would rather give multiple chances to an unproven or unsuccessful quarterback than a back with too much mileage … and that mileage number gets smaller every year.

And that’s why Fournette and McCaffrey, and Elliott and Bell, and all the other young backs storming the gates, only have a few years of a rosy future to which they can look forward.

They could be the catalysts for major change on the field and in the market … unless they’re not.

The Texans also need the bond Watson can immediately forge with Cheap NBA Basketball Jerseys fellow Clemson product DeAndre Hopkins. Their top wide receiver was underused and inefficient (78 catches, 954 yards, four TDs on 151 targets last season) with Osweiler and Savage after a big season in 2015. That’s unacceptable for a No. 1 with so much talent.

The Texans simply aren’t good enough around QB to dominate the South. Things are progressing in Indianapolis and Tennessee as the health of Luck and Mariota improves. The Colts and Titans have shot up offensively with better lines to match impressive arrays of skill-position players.

That’s the thing with shot attempt stats.

Pay attention to No. 3, folks, because if you don’t, you Really Cheap Jerseys might be the dude standing atop the Green Monster, arguing with your girlfriend, whom you hoped would be your fiancée, who will not be your fiancée, and who will also probably not be your girlfriend for much longer. The crowd might start to chant, “SHE SAID NO!” and then someone might take a video of you and then you might go somewhat viral.

“This is America; we’re all free to do whatever’s best for us. We’re just privileged to be in a position to be going.”

Going to the White House is an honor and a privilege, which is why fans have been critical of players who have decided to skip the opportunity. If the leader of the free world wants to make time to celebrate a team’s accomplishments, not going is often seen as a slight to the country’s highest office, not to the man who holds the job. That criticism adds more pressure on players to attend, even if they may disagree with the administration.

And yet, some players, like rookie wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell, didn’t think twice about the context of the day. He was just excited to be on presidential grounds.

“Malcolm, some players chose not to be here today, citing political reasons. Did you ever consider not coming?” a reporter asked.

“I’ve never been to the White House. This is my first opportunity to have that,” Mitchell said. “So for me, personally, I wanted to visit.”

That’s the thing with shot attempt stats. They don’t predict with 100% accuracy (they never claimed to), so you can always find exceptions to the rule. But in the long run, it is always better to have the puck than not. Having the puck more usually means you will be shooting more than your opponent and that usually means you will score more than your opponent. The Red Wings built a dynasty, making the playoffs for 26 straight seasons and winning four Stanley Cups, knowing that possessing the puck is the most important thing to winning.

Farewell, 2016-17 Russell Westbrook

The immaculate season of Russell Westbrook is over.

The Houston Rockets, who are excellent, dispatched Westbrook’s Oklahoma City Thunder 4-1 to move on in the West. Westbrook left this season the way he lived it: scoring like a maniac New York Jets Cheap Jerseys and watching his bench give up a lead. (In Game 5, the Thunder were +12 in Westbrook’s 42 minutes and -18 in the six minutes he sat. OKC lost by six. This was a common thread throughout the series.)

Toronto, down two games to none, is already on the ropes. We can all see that. However, the Raptors can remember that this happened again last year, too, only to bounce back once the series returned to Canada and tie it up at two. That series, even then, never felt all that close. But two wins would make things more competitive, no doubt, to say the least. It’s a good place to start.

To have a chance at it, the Raptors need DeRozan to be so much better, starting immediately. DeRozan had a 33- and 32-point game in the final three of the Bucks series, which proved instrumental, and he wasn’t terrible in Game 1 against Cleveland, even as they swept to a win. On Friday, DeRozan needs to look like an overmatched wing and look like the All-Star starter he was this year.

It’s Toronto’s only small chance at making this series competitive, anyhow. “Hockey men” think that hockey can’t work in the desert. “Hockey men” think that European players are soft. “Hockey men” think that dropping the gloves is a far better way to prove a point to an opponent on the ice than scoring a goal. “Hockey men” think nothing of saying they’d love to punch their own employees because their analysis of a game contradicts everything they think they know.

NHL playoff scores 2017: Ottawa owes their barnburner win to one Jean-Gabriel Pageau

The Senators and Rangers played in one of the wackiest Stanley Cup playoff games on Saturday. A 6-5 double-overtime tilt ended after New York squandered a pair of leads and Pageau capped off his historic evening with his fourth goal.

Yes, four goals. A hat trick plus some. In a Stanley Cup playoff game. Only 11 players in NHL history have hit that mark in the postseason, with Johan Franzen being the last to do so in 2010.

Those types of games are series-changing statement games. Instead of heading into New York tied 1-1, the Senators have a two-game lead with the potential to do some real damage to the Rangers at home. After being given the short shrift by many for being a boring team, the Senators countered with quite the offensive comeback.

And, while of course it’s nice to write about Henrik Lundqvist and Craig Anderson standing on their head, high-scoring hockey games in the postseason are a nice change of pace. Especially heart-stopping, overtime ones decided by a player’s fourth goal of the game.

The Isles have a lot of upcoming forwards with scoring Texas Rangers Cheap Jerseys skills (Josh Ho-Sang, Anthony Beauvillier, Mathew Barzal, Michael Dal Colle, and Kieffer Bellows), but none of them play the power-forward game like Rasmussen. The 6’6, 215-pound center could become a net-front presence on the power play for the Islanders’ skilled forwards to finish plays with.

Outside of Tippett, nobody in the draft owns a shot like Tolvanen. The 18-year-old’s NHL-ready shot netted 30 goals in 52 games in the USHL last year, and he’ll join Boston College as a freshman in 2017-18. Rounding out the other aspects of his game may take time, but you can’t teach innate scoring prowess.

Joe Johnson saved the Jazz again against the Clippers

The Jazz started this game down 2-1 in the series to the Clippers and were in a must-win situation before heading back to Los Angeles for Game 5. There was good news for Cheap Dolphins Jerseys the Jazz as Rudy Gobert would be making his return, but before the game, it was also announced that Gordon Hayward was suffering from food poisoning. Hayward tried to play but ultimately left after nine minutes, unable to return.

The one obvious “card” they can play is Jusuf Nurkic, who may finally be available after an injury kept him out of the opening two matchups. Nurkic gives Portland a real center, which will help the makeshift lineups involving Al-Farouq Aminu and Noah Vonleh they’ve been throwing out there.

Still, the Warriors haven’t really got a breakout game from Stephen Curry or Klay Thompson yet, with Curry leading the team in scoring in Game 2 with just 19 points. One of those two going off soon seems inevitable. Draymond Green, meanwhile, had one of the most incredible games you’ll see in the series opener, recording this line: 19 points, 12 rebounds, nine assists, five blocks, three steals on 6-of-10 shooting.

Giles is another player who should be on the radar for any team Cheap Donegal Gaa Jerseys with multiple first rounders. He was a legend on the AAU circuit who was considered the best player in high school basketball from a young age before repeated knee injuries slowed his rise. He didn’t look like future superstar at Duke as a freshman, but there’s still time if he can get healthy. He’s worth a flyer for a Nets team desperate for star power.

Eagles make smart 1st-round pick with pass-rushing machine Derek Barnett

One of the best ways to dial up a massive contract in the NFL is to build a reputation for harassing quarterbacks. After selecting Tennessee pass rusher Derek Barnett with the No. 14 pick of the NFL draft, the Eagles are hoping the former Volunteer can provide big-money production at a fraction of the cost.

Barnett terrorized the SEC in his three seasons in the conference, racking up 52 tackles for loss, one off Leonard Little’s school mark, and 33 sacks, eclipsing the great Reggie White’s Volunteer record by one. His combination of speed and power along the edge made him the bane of every offensive tackle he matched up against.

His ability to shed blocks and collapse pockets won’t just boost his own numbers — it also creates easy TFLs for his teammates. Even without Barnett’s team-high 19, Tennessee still racked up 81 tackles for loss in 2016.

Dobbs said he loves his major, but he also loves football. He’s been playing the game since he was five and can’t imagine not playing it. After Dobbs graduates in May, he’ll be an actual rocket scientist. But when his football career ends, he plans on using his degree to build and design airplanes.

“Growing up, I was always fascinated with aviation, and I always succeeded in math and sciences, so aerospace engineering was right up my alley.”

In fact, over the past two offseasons, the 22-year-old completed two internships with Pratt & Whitney, a leading aerospace manufacturer.

“When I step on the field, put on my helmet, strap on my shoulder pads, each and every time I walk on the field, I understand the risks that come with playing football,” Dobbs said.

The young signal caller has all the tools to be a great Cheap Jerseys With Free Shipping quarterback in Cheap Jerseys Sunglasses the NFL. Indeed, it’s going to be hard for opposing defenses to outsmart and catch him.
