Astros GM says Carlos Gomez has to start hitting to avoid being benched

One of the (many) reasons the Astros are underperforming: center fielderCarlos Gomez. The 30-year-old impending free agent comes into Monday heading a meager .182/.238/.248 (36 OPS+) with no home runs and only 5 RBI. He’s struck out 46 times in 121 at-bats. Only the Nationals (.490 OPS) have gotten worse production from their center fielders than the Astros (.494).

On Monday, Astros GM Jeff Luhnow stated what should be pretty obvious at this point. Gomez has to start hitting to avoid being benched.

Luhnow on Gomez: “I think he’s going to have to turn it around at some point otherwise we’re not going to be able to continue to play him.”

The Astros called up prospect Tony Kemp on Monday, and Kemp is fully capable of playing center field. The team could also slide either Colby Rasmus or George Springer into center field. They have options at the position.

Gomez hasn’t hit much since coming over from the Brewers in a trade last season. He put up a .242/.288/.383 (84 OPS+) batting line in 41 games with the Astros last year after hitting .262/.328/.423 (104 OPS+) in 74 games with Milwaukee. Gomez hit .284/.356/.477 (129 OPS+) with 23 home runs and 34 steals as recently as 2014, remember.

Manager A.J. Hinch has already started to scale back on Gomez’s playing time. Jake Marisnick has started two of the last three and three of the last eight games in center field. Kemp is not coming up to ride the bench, so Gomez figures to lose more playing time going forward.

Gomez will be a free agent after this season, and while there is still plenty of season to go, it is very much in doubt whether the Astros will make him a qualifying offer. Gomez is still reasonably young, but, if he doesn’t pick up the pace and soon, he’s going to wind up costing himself a ton of money.

Antonio Cromartie will be keeping busy this summer, even if he remains a free agent. He also won’t be getting much sleep.

On Sunday, Cromartie’s wife, Terricka Cromartie, gave birth to twins, named Jynx Revell-Antonio Cromartie and J’adore Nayvi Cromartie, as US Weekly reported.

Before Manziel can do that, though, he’ll need to sort out his legal future. In late January, Manziel allegedly assaulted Colleen Crowley, whose attorney alleged that Manziel ruptured her eardrum during the incident. Last week, Manziel turned himself into police after a grand jury indicted him. He was released on bail and appeared in court on Thursday, where a judge ordered him to stay away from Crowley and told him that he wasn’t allowed to possess any firearms.

Manziel declined to comment to reporters at the hearing.

“I get kind of emotional about it because he’s very close to me. He’s really a great kid. And it’s a shame that he’s been categorized like he his. But he’s brought that on himself,” Smith said. “We’re always going to be there for him. We’ll continue to love him just like I love the people in my family.”

Bears Coach John Fox Recalls Sept. 11 Attacks: ‘It’s Kind of Embedded in Me’

A few hours into their video work, Fox’s wife, Robin, called and asked him if he knew what was going on.

Stunned by his wife’s alarming tone, Fox told her he didn’t know what she was talking about. The coaches then opened the drapes in their offices and saw the Twin Towers missing from New York City’s skyline. In their place, they saw billowing smoke.

Fox and the Giants were departing from their plane when the flight that went down near Pittsburgh was pulling out of the jet way at Newark International Airport in New Jersey.

When the whole team and coaching staff found out about the attacks, several of them discovered they knew someone who had died. For Fox, it was the man who built his house who was killed.

The Giants practice facility was set up as a morgue, but no bodies ever arrived.

Two days after the attacks, NFL games were postponed that week. Fox visited Ground Zero with a group of people from the Giants and witnessed first responders still searching for bodies, an image that stays in his memory to this day.

Fourteen years later, Fox is preparing to play the Packers again, but this time in Chicago. Now, 800 miles away and three teams later, he wears an NPYD cap to honor the first responders as he leads the Bears’ workouts in Lake Forest.

“It’s kind of embedded in me ever since,” Fox said. “I lost some close friends. It holds a special place every Sept. 11.”

Selling counterfeit merchandise is a serious crime, and the Super Bowl is a prime location for these criminals.

In a townhouse development in Glendale, Arizona, a team of federal agents had a sting for illegal merchandise.

Merullo played three games in the 1945 World Series and went 0 for 2. The Cubs lost in seven games to Detroit, and haven’t made it back to the Series since then.
